Costa Calida Information

The Costa Calida (also known as the Warm Coast) spans approx 250km of the Mediterranean coast, situated in the province of Murcia in south-eastern Spain. It spans from El Mojon in the north to the Aguilas resort in the south. To the north of Costa Calida is the Costa Blanca (White Coast) and the Costa Almeria to the south. The Costa Calida has an annual Mediterranean climate with little rainfall which gives it the name ”Warm Coast”. With about 315 days of sunshine every year and little rainfall it stays true to the name.

The biggest feature of the Costa Calida is the large saltwater laggon called the Mar Menor (or the Little Sea) which is the largest of its kind in Europe. The Mar Menor is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a little strip of land called La Manga (or The Sleeve). The Mar Menor is on average about 5ºC warmer than the Mediterranean Sea so its beaches are popular with the tourists.

Two important coastal towns in the Costa Calida are Cartagena and Mazzaron, particularly Cartagen with a long history dating back 3,000 years ago, it had been used as Iberian Capital and was also an important city in Roman times, even a Roman theatre. Cartagena is also one of the most important naval bases in Spain.

Every year in the town of Aguilas there is a carnival that takes place two weeks before the Lent in Aguilas. The carnival groups will unveil all their outfits and costumes on Sunday and there will be parades around the town until Tuesday. People may sample the local food and drink too.
