Costa Almeria Information

The province of Almería, located in southern Spain is bordered by the Granada and Murcia provinces as well as the Mediterranean Sea. The capital of Almería is the city of Almería. The area is 8,769km² with a population of 546,499 (2002) and a density of 62.32/km². Almería belongs to the autonomous community of Andalucia, that is situated in southern Spain.

Europe’s only desert can be found in Almería and it is part of the National Park of Sierra Nevada which is shared with the Granada province. The desert landscape and climate that gives its uniqueness to Almería has made it a popular setting for Western films, due to the demand of these locations, there have been a few Western towns that were built near the desert. Films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars were recorded here due to he perfect desert setting.

To the west of Almería there are the highly developed resorts of Roquetas de Mar and Aguadulce which have the facilities to accompany any package holiday. As well as complexes in development with hotels, golf and marinas.

Each year towards the end of August there is a fiesta in Almeria City that celebrates the Virgen del Carmen. Virgen del Carmen was the protector of the fishermen and that’s why they celebrate it in the traditional fishing towns too.

The 26th December there is a major fiesta in the city of Almería. The fiesta is called the “Fiesta Del Pendon” and they celebrate the time when the Catholic Kings had taken back Almería from the Moors. They walk through the streets with their three army standards held high.
