The Costa Blanca or the "White Coast" lies in the province of Alicante in Spain. It boasts 200 kilometres of coastline stretching from the town of Denia in the north down further south to the city of Torrevieja. It’s a huge tourist destination particularly popular with the British and Germans. It has two major tourist hotspots that are the cities of Benidorm and Alicante.
Alicante airport is the main airport for the Alicante and Murcia provinces and is situated just 9km outside of Alicante. With access to destinations all over Europe and not just limited to the UK it’s considered one of the 50 busiest airports in Europe. It has two terminals and a new one due to be finished in 2009.
The Costa Blanca has plenty of festivities (fiestas) for your leisure. Most cities or towns have their own celebrations each year originating from religion but some have become more general celebrations across the Costa Blanca.
Semana Santa (Holy Week) is the Spanish Easter, this time offers a carnival like atmosphere.
Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) festivals in most towns celebrate the time when Christianity was re-established back in Spain. You will expect to find participants dressed as either Moors or Christians re-enacting battles and big firework displays. Each town on the Costa Blanca celebrates this festival at different times of the year.
Fallas (Fire Festival) runs for five days every year in March. Big paper maché figures (representing local figures) are made (they are known as ninots). Fireworks are put inside the figure and on the day of La Crema they are set alight. Expect daily fireworks at this time.
